A Black Creek and Merville Summer Runs on Its Own Calendar

If you moved out here from town, you already know the pull. Old Island Highway opens up, the farm stands come alive, and the weekends stack themselves without much help. What takes a season or two to learn is that the good stuff runs on a rhythm nobody publishes in one place. The speedway has its nights. The flower farm has its opening week. The tide chart runs the beach, not the calendar app on your phone.

This is a guide to that rhythm for people who already live here.

The thesis in one paragraph

Black Creek and Merville aren't a destination you visit. They're a week you assemble. Thursday belongs to the farm stands, Saturday night belongs to Saratoga, low tide belongs to whoever bothered to check the chart posted at Miracle Beach Nature House. Miss the pattern and you get a fine summer. Catch it and you get the summer your out-of-town family keeps asking about.

The week, roughly

Nothing on this table is a rule. It's a default. The point is that the rhythm exists, and once you see it, the summer plans itself.

Saratoga Speedway is the neighborhood clock

You can hear it from the highway on a still night. Saratoga Speedway sits about 20 minutes from Campbell River in Black Creek and runs a May-to-October season of stock car races, modified vehicle competitions, monster truck shows, and other motorsports events. The 2026 schedule is worth marking:

• Battle at Black Creek weekend on June 27 and June 28
• Eve of Destruction on July 4
• Quinsam Classic across July 10 and July 11
• Additional Saturday race nights on July 18, July 25, August 8, and August 15

Two practical things residents figure out by their second summer. First, parking is free in the Speedway lot, there's no parking on Macaulay Road, and outside food and beverages are prohibited with bag checks at entry. Second, if you live within a couple of concessions of the track, plan your quiet evenings around the schedule linked above rather than hoping. The nights are loud. They're also short. Most feature evenings wrap by 9:30 p.m.

The Coastal Black, McCormick, and flower farm loop

The tightest Saturday morning loop in this part of the Island runs three stops and lands you home before lunch with something for the table, something for the vase, and a bottle for later.

Coastal Black Estate Winery on Endall Road. This is an award-winning estate fruit winery and cidery at the base of Mount Washington on the outskirts of the Comox Valley, a four-generation family farm producing wine, cider, fresh market fruit, vegetables, and raw honey. The seasonal draw shifts across the year. Tulip Fest runs in spring, Sunflower Fest brings the sunflower maze in summer, and Pumpkin Fest returns in the fall for what is now more than eleven years running with corn and hay bale mazes, wagon rides, and musical acts. If you can't make it out to Endall Road, their truck is at the Comox Valley Farmers' Market on Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

McCormick's farm store in the heart of Black Creek. Brian and Lia McCormick grow leafy greens and vegetables, raise chickens, host chef-led cooking demos, and run a farm store filled from March through November with spices, produce, and treats. Their driveway stand nearby runs on the honour system. The stand stocks fresh produce, berries, and non-GMO pasture eggs, restocked daily at the farm gate.

Black Creek Flower Farm. The U-Pick field is the reason to add this to your loop between late June and Thanksgiving. The U-Pick flower field is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a flower field season running July through late September or until first frost. Their timing note is worth keeping in mind. The farm retail store opens for the season July 1, the self-serve stand opens late June, and the U-Pick garden opens late June to early July. Sweet corn arrives from August through mid-September, which is when this stop shifts from a bouquet run to a dinner run.

Miracle Beach only works if you read the tide chart

This is the piece newcomers miss for a full summer. At Saratoga Beach the tide goes out for more than a quarter of a mile, creating a hard-packed oceanfront that continues for well over a mile into the calm waters of the Salish Sea with warm, shallow, safe swimming conditions. Miracle Beach is the same story with better tide pools.

The trick is planning for low tide, not for lunch.

Black Creek flows past the Miracle Beach Nature House, which has natural-history displays. Beachcombers will find a tide chart posted here daily from late May to September. Pick up a brochure and take a self-guided nature walk.

Read the chart before you set out. A high tide at 1 p.m. means a sandy strip and warm water for the kids. A low tide at 1 p.m. means a seashore profusion of sand dollars, crabs, and starfish and a completely different afternoon. Both are worth planning for. Neither is worth stumbling into.

One family-only note worth passing along. In June the park hosts non-competitive annual sandcastle-building events with sculptures created by local beachgoers, and low tide reveals a wide variety of marine life that visitors are asked to observe rather than handle.

What actually changed in 2026

Two updates worth knowing about if your last local recon was a year ago.

The first is at Pacific Playgrounds. New pickleball courts opened at Pacific Playgrounds on June 19, 2026. If you'd written off the resort as a summer-visitor property, this is a reason to reconsider. Pickleball capacity anywhere north of the Comox Valley has been thin, and adding courts here changes the weekday routine for a lot of residents in Merville and along the Old Island Highway.

The second is quieter but matters. Miracle Beach Mini Golf is open seasonally in late spring and summer, with a round of mini golf, an ice cream cone, and a cafe beverage on offer. It's the standing answer to "what do we do with the grandkids for two hours." Keep it in your back pocket.

The weekday reset

The best-kept part of living out here isn't the weekend. It's Tuesday morning. Two spots do the heavy lifting.

Seal Bay Nature Park. South of Black Creek, Seal Bay has multiuse trails that are well marked and begin from the main trailhead on Bates Road, with easy cranking terrain and quiet for those looking for peace of mind. Seal Bay Regional Nature Park is a BC Wildlife Watch viewing site where California and Steller sea lions, seals, and migratory birds gather along this stretch of coastline, with activity picking up in spring when sea lions follow the annual herring and eulachon migration.

Woodhus Slough for the birders. Over 150 bird species and more than 200 plant species have been recorded in the slough and adjacent marsh, fields, beach, and gravel flats. Viewing trails lead out into the slough from the parking lot in Oyster River Regional Park, reached by turning east on Glenora, which follows the north side of the Oyster River.

Neither of these needs a plan. That's the point of them.

One shoulder-season note

If you're the household that hosts the September and October visitors, the fall runs longer here than most people expect. Pink salmon spawn from August to October, chinook in September and October, chum in October and November, and coho from October to December, and steelhead and cutthroat trout are also possible at the Oyster River Hatchery. Combined with Black Creek Flower Farm's pumpkin, gourd, squash, and seasonal decor stretch from mid-September through October 31, you have a real autumn program without leaving a five-kilometre radius.

The summer runs June through August. The rhythm runs longer.
